What?

The Champaign County Environmental Stewards’ mission is to support efforts to provide Champaign County area citizens with safe and convenient collection options for potentially problematic household materials at the end of their useful life.

Why?

  • Household hazardous waste (HHW) consists of leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients that require special care when you dispose of them. Proper HHW disposal prevents pollution that could endanger human health and the environment. Champaign County residents wait years to have even a single one-day HHW collection offered by the IEPA.
  • Solutions are needed to provide Champaign County residents with improved options for recycling carpets, mattresses, and other problematic household materials.
  • No regional program to address this need currently exists.

How?

CCES relies on volunteers. CCES invites individual donations, foundation funds or charities, grants. At present, two CCES programs are: Education and Outreach Program, and Fundraising and Resources Program.

The CCES Education and Outreach Program serves as the central information and education resource for the public about locally available and responsible re-use, recycle, or collection options for household materials that pose potential health and/or environmental problems at the end of their useful life.

This CCES Fundraising and Resources Program conducts ongoing fundraising appeals to support the nonprofit mission.
